These Last Two Dollars

Cold weather never stops seniors from coming out to Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corporation's Breakfast and Blues for Seniors events.  Saturday, October 26th was a brisk and sunny autumn morning, and no exception as anxious seniors began filing into the Thurgood Marshall Library early, eager to listen to some foot-stomping, finger-snapping Down Home Blues.

This bi-annual event gave the GADC staff, volunteers, and the Chicago Public Library another opportunity to serve 100+ seniors.  From escorting them to their seats, taking their coats, and offering them orange juice and coffee, the goal is to show our appreciation and to make our seniors feel special, while exposing them to the library.  A hot, hearty, delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, hash browns, buttery grits, bacon, sausage and flaky homemade biscuits was served while seniors rhythmically nodded their heads to two hours of sweltering sounds of bluesman Johnny Drummer and the Starlighters.

Once breakfast was over and the stomachs filled, the dancing began.  Some seniors put down their walkers and got into the groove.  Others just got up and moved to the sounds of the classic blues tune, These Last Two Dollars, and still others waited for Johnny Drummer's famous harmonica solo.  Joining the event and sharing information was Mary Ellen Guest of the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association (HCBA); the dynamic duo Felicia and Alicia Roberts of the University of Chicago; and GADC's Affordable Care Act In-Person Counselor, Khayeem Anderson.
