Something to Read Into, Auburn Gresham Unveils It's First Little Free Library!

The first of many Little Free Libraries, was unveiled at Westcott Elementary School, in the Chicago southside inner city community of Auburn Gresham. The project was brought to Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Coporation (GADC), during 2015 national literacy month (September), by the United Way Neighborhood Network, (of which GADC is one of their latest cohorts), on behalf of Northern Trust community affairs.

Housing group gets grant to buy, rehab and sell more than 200 homes

NHS aims to buy and renovate more than 200 homes in targeted neighborhoods, then sell them to local residents at market rates. The group hopes to help 180 to 240 low- to moderate-income residents become homeowners during the next several years. NHS plans to raise an additional $3.4 million for the effort, topping out the initiative at $5 million. NHS is still deciding which neighborhoods it will focus on, officials said, but the Chicago communities of Belmont-Cragin, Hermosa, Humboldt Park, Pilsen, Woodlawn, Chatham, Auburn Gresham, Brighton Park, Morgan Park and West Pullman have been targeted.

Dr. Heide Klumpp (PhD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago is conducting a research study on depression. After School Matters® Applications Now Open For Paid Apprenticeship Programs and Internships!

After School Matters is now accepting applications for its Fall program cycle. More than 300 programs in the arts, communications, science, sports and technology will be offered beginning the week of September 28 at more than 70 Chicago public high schools, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library and community-based organization locations throughout the city as well as downtown at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts. Teens can search and apply for Fall programs online at afterschoolmatters.org.

Women veterans in Illinois now have their own community center.  City, state and community leaders joined members of “National Women Veterans United” to cut the ribbon for the Illinois Community Women Veteran’s Center in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
