Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC) houses a COVID Response and Recovery Team, more commonly known as the CRT. As we know, the pandemic delivered severe adversity to small businesses everywhere. As part of finding creative ways to continue to support local businesses, as they work to bounce back, we took our consultations on the road. Normally, Norma Sanders, NBDC program manager works with students in the summer to collect asset information of local businesses. This year, she trained the CRT team to assist with outreach with small businesses in mind and designed a business mapping plan. We went from businesses along several corridors sought to personally go to every business in our service area and understand the effects of the pandemic, current needs, and readiness for functionality during COVID. We also wanted to understand how many businesses had closed and stayed closed, closed and re-opened, or had not shut their doors at any point. This not only allowed us to check in on our businesses, but it also allowed us to capture feedback on needs of local businesses, (those open and onsite), via a short survey. In addition to conducting these surveys, we left each open business with some additional PPE, "we are open" signs, and social distancing signs to the businesses depending on need. After they were comfortable working with the NBDC manager on Auburn Gresham’s 60620, we expanded the outreach to businesses for parts of 60619 and 60652 zip codes, communities that we partner with in Greater Auburn Gresham.
